Constructivism

pp. 45

Much traditional teaching is based on the model of a pipeline through which knowledge passes from teacher to students.

The name constructivism derives from an alternative model, according to which the learner has to construct knowledge afresh every time.

Jean Piaget, the most influential advocate of constructivist education popularized the slogan: "to understand is to invent."

The role of the teacher is to create the conditions for invention rather than provide ready-made knowledge.
